From kitchen sink wash days to finding my curls

From kitchen sink wash days to finding my curls

Growing up, haircare in my home didn't look like what you'd typically expect, and honestly, I didn't realize how special that was until much later.

I was raised by my dad. And from the outside, you might assume that meant haircare fell to the side, or was something I had to figure out on my own. But it was actually the opposite.

My dad showed up in the only way he knew how, consistently, and with care.

He would oil my hair the same way it had likely been done for generations before him. Coconut oil warmed up and worked through my scalp with intention. Then came wash days in the kitchen sink - me leaning back, him (aggressively) rinsing and shampooing my hair, doing his best to make sure every strand was clean. Afterward, he'd part my hair right down the middle and pull it into a tight ponytail. Not a single hair out of place.

It was routine. It was love. It was what we knew.

But as I got older, I started noticing my hair didn't behave the same way as everyone else's. It wasn't just "frizzy" or "messy" but it had a pattern, a texture I didn't fully understand yet. And naturally, I got curious. I started exploring products, trying to figure out how to wear my hair in a way that felt like me.

That's when things started to shift.

Every new product I brought home came with questions. "Why are you wasting money on this?" "Isn't oil enough?" "Your hair is fine the way it is."

And I get it now. At the time, it felt frustrating, like I was trying to explain something I didn't even fully understand myself. But looking back, he wasn't dismissing me. He just didn't have the same reference points. For him, haircare was oiling, washing, and tying it back. That was care. That was enough.

What I was stepping into was completely new territory, for both of us. There was a learning curve. Not just for me, figuring out my curls, but for him too, watching me move away from what he knew, into something he didn't quite understand yet. And even if he questioned it, even if it didn't make sense to him at first, he still let me explore. He still made space for me to figure it out.

That's something I carry with me now. Because the truth is, everything I know about caring for my hair started with him. The discipline. The consistency. The understanding that haircare is something you show up for. And everything I've learned since about texture, about styling, about embracing my curls - that's been my journey. It's built on a foundation he gave me, standing at the kitchen sink, doing the best he could with what he knew.
